The Zero Vibration project

Vibrations from hand-held machines is a well-known but unfortunately still a huge health problem for hundreds of thousands of workers around the world.

In Sweden alone, 34 % of work-related injuries and long-term illness are related to vibration-induced injuries, according to a report from the Swedish Work Environment Authority.

It is also a long-term industrial and economic problem as workplaces with high degree of vibrations are not considered attractive.

The Swedish Zero Vibrations Project “ZeroVib” is an effort to reduce this problem. In this project, that officially started in 2013 more than 30 Swedish organisations, research teams, trade unions, user and manufacturers have cooperated and are still cooperating. The project leadership was given to RISE, where Mr Hans Lindell and his team had been working on anti-vibration research since 1990.

The ZeroVib project has led to two major technological breakthroughs and several improvements:

  1. A new method for reducing vibrations from rotating hand-held machines.
  2. A new technology to reduce vibrations from impacting (“hitting”) machines (rock drills, stampers, compactors etc). This technology is patented and is called ATVA™, which stands for Auto Tuning Vibration Absorber. This website is published by the ATVA™ Licence Group AB, a company founded to commercialise the ATVA Technology.
  3. Improvements concerning isolation with conventional dampening methods

A summary of all these achievements is presented in the Zero Vibration Film (below). You will also find more information at the RISE website.
